Hem: the sewn edge of a garment. The bottom of your skirt.
Common skirt shapes for bridal gowns: A-Line, Trumpet, Mermaid, Full, Ballgown.
Hem cost is based on the width of the skirt, how many layers are in the skirt and if the hem has lace or horsehair.
Alterations often done on a wedding gown or bridesmaids dress include shortening shoulder straps, taking in the sides of the bodice, taking in the waist, hemming, adding bra cups, and filling in a deep plunge. Taking in a dress works best if the dress is no more than one or two sizes too large. Letting out a dress can be difficult if there is not enough material in the seams. When you are dress shopping, if you need to decide between two sizes go with the larger!
